British Beet Research Organisation (BBRO)

The British Beet Research Organisation is a not-for-profit company owned jointly by British Sugar plc and the National Farmers' Union. It administers a fund raised through a contractual levy between each grower and the processor. Its aim is to finance a research and knowledge transfer programme that will enable the UK sugar beet industry to improve competitiveness and profitability whilst working in a sustainable and environmentally acceptable manner. The programme is comprised of specific projects undertaken by research contractors including mainly Broom's Barn, British Sugar plc, Rothamsted Research, NIAB, The Arable Group, Central Science Laboratories and ADAS.

RESEARCH AREAS/THEMES: 

An over-arching theme is environmental and economic sustainability.

Specific research areas are:

  • Crop physiology and nutrition
  • Control of pests, diseases and weeds
  • Beet harvesting, handling and storage
  • Soil management and crop establishment
